Data Scientist

The Duke River Center is looking to hire a data-savvy environmental scientist or a data scientist interested in environmental science to join StreamPULSE, an international research project aimed at measuring and modeling river ecosystem dynamics. The successful candidate will have interests and experience in open science and enabling collaborative research, and ideally a background in the environmental sciences.  A graduate degree in either data or computer science or in an environmental science is desired but not required. The position includes support for the candidate to attend professional meetings and professional training workshops and the opportunity to interface with collaborators at the USGS Center for Integrated Data Analytics and like-minded data scientists associated with Duke's Data Science Initiative as well as the faculty, students and staff of the Duke River Center. 

​Key tasks include:

 - Managing a cloud-based data platform for an international collaborative project, 
 - Creating functions and scripts for researcher use, and
 - Developing new features that facilitate understanding of stream ecosystems through creative visualization or analysis.
 
Ideal candidates will have experience with most or all of the following:
 - R (especially tidyverse), 
 - MySQL, 
 - Unix command line, and 
 - GitHub.
 - Experience with Python (Flask, Pandas), D3.js, or web development is desired but not essential
